Sports today is a driving force that supports development, a phenomenon
that motivates and influences people. For this reason, sports, which has
become a sociocultural institution, is an important tool in international
relations (GSB, n.d.). The relationship between sports, politics, and diplomacy
has a very long history. In the ancient Olympics, a truce was declared between
the dates of the games to protect fans and players (Murray, 2012). The
International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decisions in 1980, which played an
active role in Taiwan gaining independence from China (Baker et al., 2017),
and the Ping Pong diplomacy aimed at reducing tensions between the United
States and China (Özbey et al., 2021) are some concrete examples that support
this relationship.
