Psychological flexibility refers to the ability to regulate one’s behavior in line with personally meaningful goals while taking account of current circumstances and internal experiences. From this perspective, difficult thoughts and emotions do not necessarily need to be eliminated; what matters is how a person acts in their presence. In acceptance and commitment therapy, psychological flexibility is described through the processes of acceptance, cognitive defusion, present-moment awareness, self-as-context, values, and committed action (Hayes et al., 2006). However, the concept is not limited to a particular therapeutic approach. Broader theoretical accounts emphasize the importance of adapting to changing environmental demands and adjusting behavior to the situation for mental health (Kashdan & Rottenberg, 2010). Psychological flexibility can therefore be studied beyond clinical symptoms, across different areas of life in which people encounter difficulties.
