Mesopotamia, corresponding to present-day Iraq and situated between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, was home to advanced civilizations such as the Assyrians and Babylonians, whose cultural prominence spanned from approximately 4000 BCE to 600 BCE (Kornexl, 2010/2011: 42–47). Archaeological evidence—including reliefs, miniature sculptures, and written records—indicates the integration of games and physical activities into daily and ceremonial life. Ancient Mesopotamian games often resemble the early precursors of modern sports.
